6th Annual Nike Dream Classic:
Bishop's Hammered By Dudley--(Jan. 18, 2000)

dreamlogo.jpg (9942 bytes)This weekend we attended a veritable basketball marathon, and we've got lots to write about and a lot of very good photos from some of the games.  Our good friend and correspondent Jason Day was also there, and Larry Gray's photos will be available sometime tomorrow (we're told), so watch for those too.  Our own photos aren't as good (we can say that without even having seen Larry's) but then something is better than nothing, right?  We'll also be posting articles up about the Double Pump and the complete results, but since we just came back from the Dream Classic, and these games are fresh, we thought we'd do this in a sorta, kinda reverse order.

The first game of the day at the Nike Dream Classic at the Pyramid was a team from North Carolina, the Dudley Panthers, and they played a team from La Jolla, The Bishop's School.  We didn't see the game (rain and traffic), but we did get the details, and it's not pretty:

Dudley 85, La Jolla Bishop's 33

Bishop's was playing without their star player Nick Booker (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) who is out with a hairline fracture in his foot (at least according to the e-mail we got from his mom, Barbara, yesterday).  Now Nick was probably the principal reason this team was invited to the event in the first instance, and that's not to slight the rest of the team, which is a bunch of great kids,  but among the current group of players, there probably are no other current mid to high level D-I players on the team, whereas there are more than a couple on Dudley.  And we don't mean to take anything away from the kids at Bishop, but right now most of them are still pretty young and developing, and there was just no way that these guys were going to compete evenly with the Panthers, at least not without some assistance from Nick. Dudley started three seniors and two juniors, and they went 5'-11", 5'-11", 6'-3" 5'-10" and 6'-7"--speed, experience and height.  Bishop's started two juniors, two sophs, and a freshman.

In the first quarter the Dudley Panthers stretched out to a 25-2 lead, and it was pretty much over.  With another 16-6 quarter in the second, Dudley went into the locker room with a 41-8 lead.  Fortunately for Bishop's (if there is a bright spot in this game) there weren't  alot of coaches around to witnesss this train wreck, and they really didn't start to show up in force until the later Fairfax v. Westchester game (which was a heck of a game, unlike Saturday's blowout). The second half got a liitle better as Bishop's managed to score another 25 points before the game ended, but it wasn't even close to enough:  The third quarter was a 21-13 mismatch, and the fourth quarter was worse: 23-12, Dudley.

Dudley had 5 players in double figures. Here's the box:

We can't give you scoring percentages by the halves, because, like the playing time for this box, Miss Toni and Ebony (thanks, ladies) were just working out the bugs on the stats software during this early morning game, so the actual stats were entered "after the fact",  and keeping track of playing time manually wasn't in their job descriptions, at least not until they got the computer under control.  Anyway, we can tell you that Dudley shot .565 in the game, making (as you can see) 36 of 52 field goals, 3-5 from three, 12-18 from the line, etc.

Here's the box for Bishop's (parents, if there are children in the room, you might want to send them out for a while):
