Lakey Selected As Player
Of The Week--(Jan. 19, 2000)

Seems it's our day to report on stuff from the Valley.  Yesterday the Daily News had their local basketball "Player of the Week" feature, and today, the LA Times featured their "Athletes of the Week" selections as well.  Both papers were unanimous in their selections for the boys' player: Russell Lakey (6'-0" Sr. PG/SG) of Harvard-Westlake.    Here's why:

Lakey, who is currently being recruited by four Ivy League schools (including Penn, Columbia, Cornell and Yale), as well as LMU, Pepperdine, Boston U, Boston College, and most recently Cal (and possibly a few more Pac-10's as well), had a phenomenal week:  He's currently averaging 22.6 ppg, and 5.8 assists.  Last week, he started off with a 36 point performance, helping the Wolverines to a 76-73 win over Chaminade (at the time ranked as the No. 2 team in the region by the LA Times, since dropped to No. 6), and then he hit for 17 in the win against St. Francis. He finished the week on Thursday in a 30 point performance against Notre Dame, in which he scored 27 points in the second half, 10 in the fourth quarter.
