Dominguez No. 1 In All The Polls...
All Of 'Em--(Feb. 8, 2000)

There are several national polls and rankings that are issued each Tuesday, among them the best known and most popularly read USA Today "Super 25" national rankings compiled by Dave Kreider.   There are others, but the USA Today ranking seems to have become the bellweather for all rankings from a national point of view.  Call it good marketing, or simply the fact that more people read USA Today, or as we like to call it, "McNews", but whoever winds up ranked by USA Today as the No. 1 team at the end of the season is said to have "won" the "national high school championship."  Never mind that there isn't any such thing. . . hey, it sure sounds good to say you're a national champion, and that's exactly what the folks at Compton Dominguez are saying right now, and it's what they'll continue to say when they add to the already plentiful number of banners hanging from the rafters of the Dominguez gym, with their new "National High School Championship" banner that they'll surely hang in a couple of weeks. . . probably right next to their 1999-2000 CIF Division II State Championship banner that they'll be hanging at the end of March.

Sure enough Dominguez has displaced Oak Hill on just about everyone's poll, and first up, here's what USA Today had for their rankings today:

Of course, USA Today isn't the only poll that we have access to, and these guys who do this stuff for a living are always sending us their polls, so we might has well post them up for comparison's sake.  The poll that we generally like a lot is the one compiled by Jamie DeMoney and Jeremy Plowman, which they call the "National Prep Poll".  Here's what they had to say about the national situation, and of course, they have Dominguez at No. 1.  Oak Hill is only No. 3, but hey, it's just an opinion, right? This does differ a lot from USA Today but that's why everyone has an opinion and a certain body part . . . . We're sure most of you aren't interested in the majority of the "national" stuff, especially if you check in here just to find out what's going on regionally, but for those who care to read it, we'll post the complete report (we assume that's why Plowman and DeMoney sent it to us):

FEATS OF THE WEEK: The Pyramid at Long Beach State University was the site of Nike Extravaganza V, featuring a Top 5 rematch between No. 1 Compton, Calif., Dominguez and No. 3 Mouth of Wilson, Va., Oak Hill. Tyson Chandler had 17 points as Dominguez avenged a loss earlier this season to Oak Hill, winning, 60-47, before a standing-room-only crowd of 5,500. In other Extravaganza action, regionally ranked Concord, Calif., De La Salle defeated No. 12 Santa Ana, Calif., Mater Dei, 55-51, avenging its only loss of the season, and No. 17 Long Beach, Calif., Poly whipped Los Alamitos 74-41 . . . In a father-son matchup, legendary Rockville, Md., DeMatha Coach Morgan Wootten, who owns over 1,200 career coaching wins, defeated Joe Wootten's Arlington, Va., O'Connell Knights, 69-59, in front of 1,700 at Catholic University . . . Super junior DeJuan Wagner scored 80 points in Camden, N.J.'s 122-66 victory over Pennsauken Tech. Remarkably, it was only the fourth-best single-game total in school history. Wagner totaled 123 points in  two games during the week . . . Minnesota's state-leading scorer Ben Paxson  of Anoka, Meadow Creek Christian completed a 95-point week with a  game-winning three-pointer to defeat Christ's Household of Faith, 64-62.  Paxson scored 35 in the game after scoring 60 in a 105-45 win over Owatonna  Christian earlier in the week . . . In a battle of regionally ranked teams,   Philadelphia, Roman Catholic defeated St. John Neumann, 79-62, before 2,500   fans at La Salle University. Consensus No. 1 recruit Eddie Griffin had 28   points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks for Roman Catholic.

While the Fox Sports poll also is interesting and has Dominguez at No. 1, we won't repost it here. . . you can find it over at any of the Rivals sites, and it's a bit different because it goes 50 teams deep. . . definitely more comprehensive than most.

And finally, just to show you that this is all more magic than real science, or that maybe that there's a way to apply some really bad science to what is really just smoke and mirrors, there's Eddie Oliver's HoopsUSA "National Consensus"  poll.  This one speaks for itself for the most part, and essentially what Oliver does is attempt to average or arrive at a formula for weighting each of the picks in the other polls and come up with a "consensus" among them.   Of course, he's got Dominguez at No. 1 too, and a couple of other local teams don't fare too badly either, but this one is really more of a summary of what the rest of the country's high school pollsters think.  We don't think there's any real "voting" going on with this poll, it just seems to be a way of presenting the rest of the polls, and then taking an average of their positions on each team.

Since Eddie e-mailed this to us yesterday, presumably so we could distribute it (and also provide a small promo for his service), we're only too happy to  post the whole thing up for everyone.  Here's what Eddie Oliver had to say:

NOTE: This week forty six (46) teams received votes for the nation’s top twenty five teams. Although they disagree on what teams should be among the top 25, all of the polls really do a great job in behalf of high school basketball. There are in fact, probably many more teams that deserve that recognition. Even though we at HOOPSUSA rate regular schools and prep/boarding schools separately, we feel this gives great credibility to the Consensus Ratings and gives more of the nations high school teams the kind of exposure they deserve. Recent surveys indicate that a majority of fans agree with the separate ratings by a two thirds majority. Anyone interested in receiving the Consensus Ratings by email on a weekly basis are asked to contact us. Fans can get the ratings emailed each week during the season for $10 or receive the ratings and a copy of the highly publicized Tournament and Events Report in late November for only $25 annually. The HOOPSUSA email address is ozone@sccoast.net

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL - CONSENSUS TOP 50 TEAMS

Note: The consensus top teams is a report generated from the weekly high school polls by Doug Huff of the Fox Sports Poll, Jamie DeMoney and Jeremy Plowman of the National Prep Poll, Dave Krider of USA Today and Eddie Oliver of HOOPSUSA. Huff’s reports appear weekly on the the Student Sports web site and on Fox Sports. DeMoney and Plowman’s National Prep Poll Ratings appear weekly in newspapers around the country and on CBS Sportsline. Krider’s reports appear weekly in the national newspaper, USA Today. School Sports, Basketball Phenoms and several others also do top 25 polls. All of these individuals work very hard gathering information and along with their respective advisors and representatives around the country, are very informed in regard to the nation’s top high school basketball teams. All the polls, including HOOPSUSA, have varying opinions in regard to teams. The consensus ratings list all the teams from all the polls who received a top twenty five rating. Our intent with the consensus report is to give all of the polls and all the teams that appear in their ratings the positive publicity that they deserve. HOOPSUSA is grateful for the efforts that all the previously mentioned individuals do with their polls and takes no credit for the information they have generated and supplied. HOOPSUSA follows their reports closely and along with the personal information we gather from viewing games and insite from other top basketball advisers around the country, gives a consensus reports several times a year, before, during and after the season is over. Four year Prep/Boarding Schools, who recruit and/or accept large numbers of players from around the country and the world are separated into a different category by HOOPSUSA. The rankings those teams receive is as high or higher than they would receive in other individual polls, just in a different place. We simply feel that prep/boarding schools schools should not be ranked with regular high schools, but we respect differing opinions about our policy. The number of teams in each poll may change from week to week. The number of total points for each team in the consensus poll was determined by the ratings in all four polls (or the number available), giving 25 points for first place, down to 1 point for a number 25 rating. When there is a tie in total points, the highest rating for the consensus report is given to the team with the highest rating(s) in any of the individual polls. When teams tied with the same number of points and received an identical highest rating(s), the best rating is given to the team with the highest winning percentage. Some team(s), that we feel are deserving, who were mentioned in Regional ratings, may be added, in order by winning percentage, to complete the total numbers of teams listed in the top fifty. Additional teams, not shown among the top fifty, are listed alphabetically with the other regionally ranked teams from all the polls. We welcome suggestions and opinions. Fans, coaches and members of the media are encouraged to contact us if they feel that other teams not mentioned deserve recognition and to notify us if any records and/or information are shown incorrectly.
