Boys Division III-AA Semifinal Details &
Bracket Updates--(Feb 27, 2000)

The semifinals were played in Division III-AA and we really don't have a clue what happened in the Bishop Montgomery v. Morningside game except the little one-liner which was contained in the LA Times "Playoff Summary."  We weren't there, and no one sent us any of the details.  All we know is the Knights beat Morningside 62-58.  And as for the teams that lost in this bracket, remember, they're still not out of it, since all four semifinalists get a trip to the State Regional tournament (due to the combining of Division III-AA and III-A into a single bracket this year).   So Morningside and Corona del Mar get the rest of this coming week off before the State Tournament starts a week from Tuesday.

We have details from the Compton Centennial game below:

Division III-AA
Semifinals

Bishop Montgomery  62, Morningside 58--Errick Craven scored 26 points and the Knights (24-5) overcame a three-point deficit in the final 1:30 to win a III-AA semifinal at Inglewood.  Unbeliveably, this little tidbit from the LA Times summary was the only thing we could find on this game. The Daily Breeze didn't have a box, and both schools are outside the coverage area of the Times and the LB Press-Telegram.  If anyone has the details of this game, please send them to us so we can include them here.

Compton Centennial 68, Corona del Mar 46---Kevin Hansen had 22 points for third-seeded Corona del Mar at Estancia High. Corona del Mar led, 27-20, at halftime before Centennial rallied. Corona del Mar still qualified for the state tournament.   The Apaches responded with a 68-46 CIF Division III-AA boys basketball semifinal victory over Corona del Mar on Friday night at Estancia High. The victory didn't come as easy as the score indicated. The Apaches (20-11) watched Corona del Mar jump to a 17-9 lead after one quarter. Three-point baskets by Kevin Hansen and Alec Hanson helped stake the Sea Kings to the early lead. Corona del Mar was within one second of taking a 10-point lead into halftime, but Eric Alvarez's three-pointer at the buzzer cut the Sea Kings lead to 27-20. Centennial took control of the game by outscoring Corona del Mar 23-9 in the third quarter. Ellis Myles, who was held to three points in the first half, scored 10 of his team-high 20 points in the third.  Centennial scoring:   Myles 20, Alvarez 16,  Davis 11, Smith 2, Joubert 9, Coleman 4, Barnes 6.   CDM scoring:  A. Hanson 3, Morris 14,  K. Hanson 22, Hietbrink 4, Templeton 3.   Scoring by quarters:  CDM:  17  10  9    10--46;  Centennial 9 11  23  25--68.
