Edison Basketball Coach Resigns;
Other Moves?--(Mar. 22,  2000)

Yesterday's OC Register was full of news about some definite and some definite coaching changes, some possible coaching changes, and some other non-moves by coaches in the Southern portion of the Southern Section. . .

First, a definite move:  Edison's boys' coach, Corey Kelly announced his resignation after for years at the helm. Kelly had compiled a 44-54 record at Edison and the Chargers went 8-16 this season.  Also at Edison, girls' basketball coach Dave White also announced last month that he too was resigning as basketball coach, but he'll still be coaching the football team at Edison.

The more interesting news though, was contained in Steve Fryer's prep column (see page 6 of the paper, or try this link). This week, Fryer debunked a few rumors that have been circulating on the SoCalHoops Message Forums for the past week:

Two definite "no moves":   Gary McKnight is not stepping down.  He told Fryer, "I couldn't afford to do that."  Fryer noted that McKnight wouldn't quit even if he won the lottery.   He also confirmed that Jamal Sampson (6'-11" Jr. C) won't be transferring.

A "maybe" move":  Fryer reports that the Los Alamitos head coaching job remains available and that one of the top candidates is Sonora's Mike Murphy who has inquired about it, but has not yet applied.   According to Fryer, "Murphy has tenure at Sonora and a strong group of underclassmen returning, so he might opt to stay put."   He also notes that former Cypress Coach Tom Gorrell, another person who many speculate would be a top choice, has not yet applied for the job.
