D-III State Finals: Bishop
Beats Pleasanton Foothill--(Mar. 20, 2000)
Bishop Montgomery 73, Pleasanton Foothill 56--Bishop Montgomery quickly turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 17-point advantage midway through the third quarter as the Knights won their first ever State Championship. The Knights (28-5), appearing in their first state final, completed their postseason sweep of winning their first Southern Section and state championships as they decisively beat Foothill of Pleasanton 73-56 in the CIF State Division III final Saturday at Arco Arena. With the Bishop Montgomery girls team winning the state championship earlier in the day, the school became the fourth in state history to have both the boys and girls teams win state titles in the same year.
Bishop Montgomery used its superior quickness and athleticism to put the game away early. The Knights opened the game on a 10-0 run in the first 2:30, thanks to four steals on the Falcons' first four possessions. Derrick Craven stole a pass on the first play of the game and went in for a layup, setting the tone for the entire game. As they have done all season, the Knights took out Foothill (29-5) with their suffocating defense. Only once in the second half did Foothill cut the deficit to under 10 points.
In all, Bishop Montgomery recorded 15 steals and forced 23 turnovers. And as they've done all season, the Craven twins led a balanced Bishop Montgomery attack with Derrick getting 16 points to go along with six assists, five steals and six rebounds, while Errick finished with 15 points, four steals Foothill shooting guard E.J. Costello scored a game-high 21 points. Center Brian Pruitt finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks, and DeVaughn Peace added 10 points. Kenny D'Oyen had eight points for the Knights, who led, 35-26, at halftime after Foothill connected for three straight 3-pointers.
The Knights put the game away for good early in the third quarter with a 10-2 run to open up a 45-28 lead after Derrick Craven hit a driving layup. The Knight defense also held Foothill scoreless for a three-minute stretch, which didn't hurt Bishop's drive either. The Knights shot 52.5 percent to Foothill's 32.6 percent, a pretty wide margin in a high school game, and it was largely Derrick, Brian Pruitt, Kenny D'Oyen and Errick, who were responsible for the good shooting, all hitting more than 50% of their shots. While Foothill tried to settle into its offense, going on a 9-2 run to close the first quarter to pull within 16-11, Bishop Montgomery started the second quarter by outscoring the Falcons 12-2 to take a 28-13 with less than three minutes left in the first half, and from there, the game was never really closer than 6. Foothill continued to threaten with perimeter shooting, as E.J. Costello knocked down two 3-pointers and Jay Chess added one to bring the score to 32-26 with 25 seconds left in the half. But any momentum that the Falcons could have carried into the locker room was short-lived when Kenny D'Oyen hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in the half. D'Oyen's shot gave the Knights a nine-point lead. The Knights suffocating defense wouldn't allow the Falcons kind of rhythm and both Mike Hoefs and Matt Burkholder, who are usually key's to the offense, combined for only 17 points and nine rebounds.
While Foothill managed to creep back to within 9 with just 3:38 left to play cutting the score to 63-54 after Chess hit two free throws, the Knights exploded for a game-ending 10-2 run. Costello led the Falcons with 18 points, and Steve Stewart collected six rebounds. For the Knights, four players finished in double figures with Brian Pruitt scoring 15 and DeVaughn Peace adding 10.
