Pt. Loma Nazarene Signs Mississippi
Transfer Brett Young--(Aug. 29, 2000)

We received a press release a couple of days ago about an NAIA signing, but just haven't had time to post it up until now. . . better late than never.  This one is about Brett Young, a 6'-4" So. SG transfer from Calvary Chapel Santa Ana who attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), and who has transferred to play with Pt. Loma Nazarene in San Diego.  For those who don't know it, Pt. Loma plays in the GSAC (against schools like Azusa Pacific, Vanguard, Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, Westmont, and others), they finished ranked at the end of last season as the No. 16 team in the country in the NAIA, pretty impressive considering the numbers of schools competing at the NAIA level (325 men's basketball programs at last count in the NAIA).  In any event, here's the press release which we received on Monday from Phil Connor, one of the assistant coaches at Pt. Loma about the signing:

Pt. Loma Nazarene University Men's Basketball Adds Brett Young

Head Coach John Block announced the signing and enrollment of Orange County's leading 3 point shooter in 1997-99, Brett Young (6'-4" So. SG) of Calvary Chapel High School. Young joins an outstanding group of incoming freshmen to the Men's Basketball Team at Point Loma Nazarene University, which finished #16 in the NAIA this past season. "Brett Young is an excellent shooter who will be able to help the team immediately. He is a great person who we are very fortunate to have join us."

Young spent last season on a baseball scholarship at Ole Miss, but returned to the San Diego school to play both basketball and baseball. He led Orange County in shooting his Junior and Senior years in high school and was named Olympic League Athlete of the Year his Senior year. Brett averaged 24.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 5.6 rebounds per game his final year at Calvary Chapel.

Young joins an already fine group of incoming players at Point Loma Nazarene University including: Jared Ines, 6' 8" 240, from Ceres High School near Modesto, California was first team in the Stanislaus CIF District and first team Central California Conference this year; Matt Enloe, 6' 6" 210, from Gig Harbor High School, Washington made the All-State Team this year at the 4A level; Derek Ellerbrook, 7'0" 225, from Westside Christian High School, Oregon averaged 15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks per game while leading his team to a fourth place finish in the State. Jeremiah Phillips, 6' 5" 210, from Silverado High School, Victorville, California was League Co-MVP and team MVP this year and was second team All-CIF Southern Section IA. John Anderson, 6' 7" 200, from Scottsdale Christian High School, Arizona was player of the year 2000. He made first team All-City and All-Region in Arizona and was Honorable Mention All-State. John played on the State Championship Teams in both 1999 and 2000, making the All-Tournament Team both years.
