The UC Irvine team played this summer on an eight day tour of Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, where they played several schools and teams, including Simon Fraser (which is the opener for Cal State Fullerton), going 4-0 on the trip. The Anteaters opened with a 102-58 victory over Simon Fraser University Aug. 24 behind 22 points and five assists from senior guard Malachi Edmond, who hit 6 of 6 from three-point range and was 8 of 9 overall. Junior guard Jerry Green added 19 points, while senior forward Ben Jones recorded 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists as six different Anteaters scored in double digits. Redshirt freshman center Adam Parada added 15 points and five rebounds. Jones scored 29 points, including seven in overtime, as UCI topped the Victoria All-Stars, 84-80, on Aug. 30. He was 11 of 19 from the floor and snared 10 rebounds. Green added 22 points, five assists and five steals. Green led the way with 25 points in a 78-67 win over Victoria Aug. 31 in the final game. He added six assists and four rebounds. Senior guard Sean Jackson scored 14 points, converting 4 of 8 three-pointers. The 7-foot Parada had 12 points and 20 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass. Green led the team in scoring for the trip, averaging 22 points per game. Jones averaged 19.3 points and 7.8 rebounds, Edmond averaged 13.5 points and Jackson 13. Parada averaged 11.5 points and 11 rebounds per game.
The men's schedule this year is also one of those good news-bad news kind of things: The level of competition, and thus the number of "guaranteed" gate games has increased, but so has the level of competition. and Irvine wil be playing Cal, UCLA, Washington, St. Mary's, University of the Pacific, but there will also be some easier games, like those scheduled against rising D-II UC San Diego (up from D-III this year), UC Riverside, LMU, Howard, South Dakota, and Belmont University.
If you're down in the Irvine area and want to see the team, as well as get some free food, come out to Bren and check it out.
