Torin Beeler Will Hold Off Signing
Until Spring, Other UCI Recruiting Notes--( Nov. 8, 2000)

Like a lot of people, we've been absolutely side-tracked, stunned and amazed  watching the historic events unfoldling around us.  And we don't mean the commencement of the fall early signing period for prospective Division I NCAA student-athletes, which started today and runs through November 15, which according to some might seem "historic" but which are kind of like a flea on a gnat's ass in comparison to the national drama being played out in Florida right now with the national election process. . . . The latter seems to have everyone (at least most everyone who voted) absolutely riveted to just about anything but sports on the web, and we've personally found that CNet's "News.com" has some really good links to election stuff all over the country, not just the same boring maps that you can find at Cnn.com. . . So, the national election for President and some incredibly intense few days at "real" work have been keeping us from posting articles on a daily basis, almost to the point that we're tempted to start calling this section "Semi-Daily" Articles. . . but on to some real news. . . . well, ok, it's a rehash of some old news, but what the heck. . . .

torinbeeler150.jpg (6951 bytes)As we reported last week with our preview of Ocean View HS, the LA Times reported yesterday (or was it the day before?) that Torin Beeler (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Ocean View will not be signing early with UC Irvine during the early signing period. According to the article in the Times, Ocean View coach Jim Harris told the paper that Torin is "way under-recruited. . . He's going to wait until the high school basketball season ends and see what develops."   According to Harris, Beeler did take trips to UC Irvine (which we think personally would be a great spot for Torin), and to Liberty University in Lynchberg, VA (which we hear is favored by some members of the Beeler family, something the Times confirmed).     But the point of the article was that UC Irvine Anteaters coach Pat Douglass should not get his hopes up for a National Letter of Intent from Beeler during the fall  (of course the missing element is the conclusion, implied in the story, that Irvine has in fact offered Beeler, which may not be the case. . .if they haven't they're nuts, but still there's no confirmation of that from Torin yet).

According to the rest of the story (much of which is old news) focusing on UC Irvine recruiting, the Anteaters got a verbal from DeVaughan Peace (6'-2" Sr. PG/SG) from Bishop Montgomery, who is expected to sign an NLI this week, but they lost out on Mark Bowens (6'-2" Sr. PG)  from Glendale, Arizona's Cactus HS, who will sign with Long Beach State, and they still apparently have a shot at Jon Wilkens of Arizona's Chandler Hamilton HS,  (another Pump N Run alum like Beeler) who is also scheduled to take a trip to Long Beach and who may also, like Beeler, wait until spring to sign.

Of course those letters for the guys signing this week will start floating in soon, and we'll be reporting on most of them involving either SoCal-based schools and the SoCal players attending not just schools located here, but signing all over the country.  And there are a lot of kids in the latter category, more than you might think, so stay tuned during the next week or so.
