Three Blue-Chip Stars Sign National Letters Of Intent
Childress, Hernandez and Little will all become members of the Cardinal basketball team.

Nov. 10, 2000

Stanford, Calif. - Another year and another stellar class of talented basketball players who will be playing for the Stanford Cardinal program.

Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery announced on Friday the signing of three players to national letters of intent, Josh Childress, Chris Hernandez
and Robert Little.

"We got exactly what we set out to get," said Montgomery. "We wanted to replace our graduating three seniors (Jarron Collins, Michael McDonald, Ryan Mendez). We took a solid look at virtually every player at those positions across the country. We decided that these three incoming players fit. They are Stanford-type people and with the talent to play at the highest level. We feel real good about this class."

Considered the #1 small forward on the West Coast by one recruiting service and ranked the nation's #3 small forward by another publication, Childress averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game last year. Childress helped lead Mayfailr to a 27-3 record and the semi-finals of the California state tournament. In one game, he scored 40 points against Cerritos. Childress possesses a mid-range shot that is often compared to former NBA star George Gervin.

"Stanford is a good fit for me," said Childress. "I feel great to be a part of a great university and basketball program. I feel very comfortable about my decision to attend Stanford."

"Josh is very gifted offensively," said Montgomery. "He has great touch, scores the ball, can shoot it deep. puts it on the floor, and can play above the rim. He is one of the top perimeter players in the country."

Hernandez helped lead Clovis West High School in Fresno to the California state championship game last season. Hernandez was the sparkplug on a team that tied a state record with 39 victories (39-3). Hernandez averaged 13.7 points and 6.7 assists per game last season as Clovis West enjoyed a #3 state ranking, and ninth in the country. In three seasons. Clovis West scored big wins over such notables as #1 ranked Dominguez and Mater Dei.

Hernandez has helped the Golden Eagles win 101 games, and for his efforts last year, was named the California State Division I Player of the Year.

"Stanford offers me the best of both worlds, great academics and great athletics," said Hernandez. "The school is close to my home, and I liked the coaching staff. It's Stanford."

Montgomery likes what he sees in Hernandez' style of play.

"Chris is a tough kid, a great leader, loves the game, wants to win, and will do what it takes to win."

Hernandez benches 310 pounds for a player who weighs 180 pounds. Hernandez played a game with nine stitches in his hand, and in another game, suffered a gash that eventually required seven stitches.

Little is a 6-foot-10, 265-pound center from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Va. Last year, Little helped lead his team to a 22-8 record and post-season competition, averaging 15 points and ten rebounds per game. He shot 67 percent from the floor. For his efforts, Little was named All-Virginia state, all-region, among numerous other honors.

"Rob made tremendous progress between his junior year and this past summer," said Montgomery. "He's a big body with great hands, is very difficult to defend around the basket, and plays very hard. He doesn't mind mixing it up. He has the body to get the job done."

Little's stock shot up after an impressive showing at numerous summer camps. Little was the leading rebounder at the ABCD camp in New Jersey this past summer. One national scouting service ranked Little the eighth-best center in the nation, and has been compared to Chicago Bulls rising star Elton Brand.

"I want to give credit to my family for their love and support," said Little. "Stanford will give me an opportunity to grow as a person and as a player. Stanford gives me a blend of a great academic environment and an excellent basketball program. This is a great opportunity."
