"Big City Brawl" Showcase Set For
January 6, 2001 At COC--(Dec. 25, 2000)

What: Big City Brawl
Where: College of the Canyons
26455 Rockwell Canyon Rd.
Santa Clarita, CA
When Saturday, January 6, 2001
Who: An eclectic mix of teams

We're not sure what the theme of this event is, nor are we certainly about the matchups, but last month someone sent us a flyer for the "Big City Brawl". . .which is sort of an odd name for a series of games that will take place not in the "Big City" but way out in the suburbs of the northern environs of L.A. County. . . still, it's a catchy name, and since Bort Escoto, head coach at Sylmar is involved, and he's now used "War on the Floor" for two different tournaments, guess he had to come up with another moniker for this one.

And while there are some serious matchups, it's the first game we want to see, as Eric Sondheimer and Paige Leech will square off against Vincent Bonsignore in a matchup of the "L.A. Times v. Daily News". . . The flyer we received doesn't say exactly what this game is going to be about (presumably it's basketball, and not just guys throwing word-processing equipment at each other), but if it's what we think it is. . ..watch out.   Here's the rest of the schedule, with games from morning until evening:

11:00 a.m. L.A. Times v. Daily News
12:30 p.m. Narbonne v. LACES
2:00 p.m. Dorsey v. Canoga Park
3:45 p.m. Chatsworth v. North Hollywood
5:15 p.m. LA Fremont v. Corona Centennial
7:00 p.m. Verbum Dei v. Washington Prep
8:30 p.m. Washington Union v. Sylmar

Obviously, there are a couple of fairly good matchups, including a few we'll want to see, like LA Fremont v. Corona Centennial (Erik and Lance Soderberg, Jamaal Williams, David Sybesma, etc), Verbum Dei (Richard Chaney, Deon Marcus, etc) v. Washington Prep (Andre Patterson), and Washington Union v. Sylmar.    Dorsey, with Donald Wilson v. Canoga Park might also be worth checking out, and if you haven't seen Chatsworth this season, it ought to be worth the drive to check out how much better Shayne Berry is playing this year as his team takes on the Huskies with Kenny Hauser, Guz Ruiz and Nathan Stern.

The flyer also noted that questions about the event should be directed to Bort Escoto at (818) 601-8776. . . and we've got a number of questions. . . But it's that Sondheimer v. Bonsignore matchup that we really want to see. . . .

See you there.
