San Diego Section Boys'
Playoff Brackets--(February 18, 2001)

Division I    Divisoin II     Divison III    Division IV    Division V

The San Diego Section has announced the playoff brackets in each of their five divisions.  Unlike the Southern Section, there are no subdivisions, reflecting the difference in size between the two. . .Southern Section has more than 500 schools in all of its divisions, whereas San Diego has 92 teams.   Still, with that many teams in San Diego,  60 still made the playoffs, comparable to the Southern Section's ratio of inclusion in the post-season tournaments. In any event, here's what we know about the San Diego Section brackets:

Division I:

The top four seeds are: No. 1 Torrey Pines, No. 2, Carlsbad, No. 3 Oceanside and No. 4 Montgomery.  Each of these four seeds will play the winners of four wild card games (called "bracket" games for some strange reason).    The wild card games are going to be played Monday, February 21 (notwithstanding that it's a legal holiday, President's Day), and the first round games will then follow on February 24.

The wild card games are:

Game A: Mt. Miguel @ Valhalla (winner gets Torrey Pines)
Game B: Bonita Vista @ West Hills (winner gets Montgomery)
Game C: Morse @ Calexico (winner gets Oceanside)
Game D: Rancho Buena Vista @ Southwest (winner gets Carlsbad)

Here's the bracket (which can also be found at the San Diego Section's own official website)

 Division III:

Like some of the smaller divisions in Southern Section, Division III in San Diego is relatively small.  This is only an 8 team bracket, but there are only 5 teams in it, and two of them are already in the semifinals given the fact that No. 3 Valley Center and No. 3 Clairemont both have first round byes on February 24.  There is only one first round game, scheduled for Saturday, February 24 between #4 Madison and Crawford. The winner will play St. Augustine. . . . No USDHS this year. . .

Another one of those smallish brackets, rivaling Division IV-A in Southern Section, this one has just 7 teams.  No.1 Christian gets a bye in the first round, which is scheduled for Saturday, February 24. Here's the bracket:

Division V:

This is a 16 team bracket with 14 teams, and the top two teams receiving byes.   No. 1 Santa Fe Christian gets a pass on Wednesday night, February 21, as does Escondido Adventist Academy; all other teams are in action. Santa Fe Christian is a team we've seen before, an excellent group which we happened to see up in Santa Maria when they were defeated by CIF SS No. 3 Buckley.  Both teams are ranked by Cal-Hi Sports in the overall California State rankings.  As of the last poll, Buckley was No. 8, Santa Fe No. 9.
