CIF D-II Boys State SoCal Regional:
First Round Scores & Details--(Mar. 7, 2001)

Division II

Dominguez 86, Ramona 65-- It probably wasn't a fitting way for a guy like Ramona Coach Al Shaffer to make an exit after 45 years as a high school basketball coach, but he really had little choice as Dominguez, which seemingly had slept through most of the first three quarters of Tuesday's first round matchup, went on a fourth quarter 21-0 tear to finish off the visiting Ramona Bulldogs, the San Diego Section's D-II runner up.  With the win, Dominguez gets to host another re-match of the Southern Section final against Inglewood on Thursday night.  But until that 21-0 run, it almost looked as if Ramona would have a chance to pull off an upset that few teams have managed this season, and in the third quarter, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run, and the Dons also committed three turnovers.  With 3:30 to play in the third quarter, the Dons, who had led by 8 at the half, were ahead by only a single point.   And while Dominguez managed to retain the lead, with some great three point shooting the Ramona team managed to climb to within a point of upsetting the Dons twice in the third. But the Bulldogs wouldn't get any closer, and at the end of three, the Dons lead was 6 points, 58-52.  While Tyson Chandler hit only a single field goal in the third quarter, he powered into the post in the fourth, and finished with a game-high 37 points. Bobby Jones finished with 17, and Darius Sanders had 11.  Ramona was led by Mark Holmes who finished with 20 points.

Inglewood 84, Hanford 79 (OT)-- Another big night by Hanford's Richard Rose was not enough as visiting Inglewood pulled away in overtime for an 84-79 victory. Rose, who scored 36 points in the Central Section final, scored 32 against Inglewood, including two 3-pointers.  But Inglewood's 6-9 post players, Doug Thomas and D'Angelo Collins, combined for 27 points to Ray Reed, who scored 23 points.  Ray Reed, who finished with 25 points, sent the game into overtime and Teddy Fletcher, who finished with 13, made three free throws to lead Inglewood to an 84-79 overtime victory on the road. DeAngelo Collins finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds, including a rebound on a last-second shot from Hanford. Doug Thomas added 13 points for Inglewood (27-5), which faces Dominguez on Thursday in a rematch of their Southern Section Championship game played last Saturday.

Mayfair 74, Eastlake 58--  No. 3 seed Mayfair (26-4) cruised past host Chula Vista Eastlake, 74-58, to move on to the second round in the state playoffs, and they will also get a rematch of their CIF Section final matchup against Redondo Union this coming Thursday.  On Tuesday night though, playing at Eastlake, Josh Childress led the Monsoons with 32 points, and 10 rebounds. . . and he only played in the first three quarters of the game.  Edwin Draughn scored 17 points and pulled down 13 boards, and he too only played for the first three quarters.  At the end of the first quarter, Mayfair looked like they were going to get a challenge, and they led by only 4 points, 17-13.  But in the second half, they outscored Eastlake, the San Diego Section D-II Champion, 19-10 to take a 38-23 lead into the locker room.   The lead grew to as much as 22 points in the third quarter.  The fourth quarter was reserved for the Mayfair bench and some of the younger players.

Redondo Union 85, Fresno Edison 55--   Redondo, behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from junior forward Adam Zahn dominated offensively and defensively in an 85-55 victory at Redondo Tuesday. Redondo (27-5) advances to play Mayfair on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Redondo. Mayfair defeated Eastlake, 74-58.  Redondo went to a zone early one and managed to limit Edison to just 33% from the field.  Dijon Thompson scored 16 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed four steals.  Point guard Keith Ellison added 13 points for Redondo, while Wendall White scored all of his nine points in the first half.
