Mater Dei's Ricky Porter
Signs With UC Riverside--(Apr. 12, 2001)

It's official:  Mater Dei's Ricky Porter (6'-3" Sr. G) has signed with the UC Riverside Highlanders Men's Basketball team.  Porter played a key role this season for Mater Dei, helping them to the D-IA Southern Section title and the State Championship in Division I.  Porter is a solid guard, who can run the point or play the two spot, and he will help Riverside a lot this next year as they take their program officially to the Division I level and move into the Big West Conference.   Congratulations to him, to Head Coach  John Masi and the Highlanders.  Here's the official press release we received this afternoon:

UC Riverside Highlanders Menıs Basketball Signs
Mater Dei Graduate Rickey Porter to National Letter of Intent


The UC Riverside menıs basketball team announced the signing of guard Rickey Porter of Mater Dei High School to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday. Porter, a 6-3 combo guard, averaged 12.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1
assists for the Monarchs, who finished the year as the number-one ranked high school team in the nation. He posted a double digit scoring average despite averaging fewer than eight shots per game.

"Rickey Porter is a tremendous addition to our program," UCR Head Men's Basketball Coach John Masi said. "Playing at Mater Dei has prepared him for the next level."

"Rickey Porter is a winner," he added. Porter scored 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs defeated Upland in the regional Division I semifinal. He scored 16 points in the Regional Finals against Clovis West. He was named all tournament at the Tournament of Champions, the Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic and the Beach Ball Classic in South Carolina.

UCR finished at 8-17 overall last season as the Highlanders played their first-ever schedule against Division I opponents. The Highlanders will join the Big West Conference for the 2001-02 school year.
