SacState Signs LA Harbor's Reggie Borges &
Grossmont JC's Joel Jones--(April 17, 2001)

Speaking of Sacramento State (which we did in our article about Bo Segeberg's signing at Montana State),  they have also reportedly signed another SoCal guy, picking up forward Reggie Borges of Los Angeles Harbor College.  Like the Montana State website, which hasn't yet been updated to feature the signing of Bo Segeberg there, the Sac State website also fails to note the signing of Borges.  But it does have some info concerning the signing of guard Raashad Hooks of West Valley College, Calif. and Joel Jones, a 6'-5" JUCO So. G/F who played last season at Grossmont JC in El Cajon.  We're still trying to track down some info on Borges, but in the meantime, here's the press release on Hooks and Jones:

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- The Sacramento State men's basketball team signed two players to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today. Point guard Raashad Hooks and swingman Joel Jones both will enroll at Sacramento State in the fall after spending the past two seasons in junior college.

"These are my type of players," head coach Jerome Jenkins said. "Both Raashad and Joel are big and athletic and will cause problems for teams in the Big Sky Conference."

Hooks comes to the Hornets after two seasons at West Valley Junior College in Saratoga, Calif. Last season he was a second team all-conference selection, after averaging 12 points and eight assists per game. At 6-2, 175 pounds, Hooks can play both point and shooting guard for Sacramento State next season.

"Raashad will help solidify our point guard situation," Jenkins said. "He does a little of everything. He can score, he passes well and he is a strong defender.

"The one thing that I like is that he comes from a strong JC program and has learned to make good decisions on the floor."

Jones spent the last two seasons at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon, Calif. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and was named first team all-league. Jones shot 48.1 percent (150-312) from the floor and led the team with 422 points. He stands at 6-5, 210 pounds and will play a multitude of positions for the Hornets next season.

"I am very excited to have Joel coming here," Jenkins said. "He is 6-5 and can jump out of the gym. We will be able to play him at the one, two and three which will cause matchup problems for other teams."

The two signees join Chris Lange and Leo Cravey who committed during the early signing period. Lange is currently a senior at Cibola HS in Albuquerque, N.M. Cravey recently completed his sophomore season at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif.
