California JUCO Showcase Set For
July 13 & 14 @ APU--(July 4, 2001)

What:   California JUCO Showcase
When:   July 13& 14, 2001
Where:   Azusa Pacific University
Who:   Top JUCO Players--Largest JUCO Event In the U.S.
   NCAA Certified Event

While we'd rather be doing just about anything else on the 4th of July besides writing, we have to get some stuff posted because we'll be out on the road for the next week or so at ABCD Camp in New Jersey, and then at the Pump's West Coast All Star Camp and Dinos' Fullcourt Press All*West Camp, so there's not going to be a lot of time between now and then for announcments or schedules.  And this is one of those announcements that just can't wait.

Dieter Horton, the head coach at Fullerton College is again organizing the event, and he has been busy putting together what should be a spectacular showcase of  some of the best JC talent in the nation.  It will certainly be the biggest junior college event in the nation this summer. The details are listed below. Because of the peculiar JUCO State Commission on Athletics rules,  Dieter is prohibited from listing the actual college teams that will be participating (sort of like the CIF rules which prohibit teams from playing outside of proscribed periods).  But that won't stop these players from just getting together an entering tournaments informally, and there will be players at the event representing virtually every Junior College in California.

Due to the size of the event, Dieter has moved it from Fullerton College, where it's been held the past few years to Azusa Pacific's new $13 million dollar arena.  They will have 52 games in 36 hours, and as for now the schedule isn't complete, nor are the rosters, but it should be great.  Games will start at 10:00 a.m. each day.  The event is NCAA certified so a lot of D-I coaches will also be there as well and it's during a live period, so guys will be running all over Southern California between Dominguez Hills, Lynwood and Azusa.....and by the way, there's no quick freeway between Dominguez (which is near the 405 and 91), Lynwood (which is off the 710) and Azusa (which is really accessed by either the 210 and the 10 freeways)....but that's not our problem right now.

And while we can't list the schools that will be playing, we can tell you that the top players will be from the following colleges:

Alameda
American River
Antelope Valley
Barstow
Butte
Canyons
Cerritos
Chabot
Chaffey
Citrus
Cypress
East L.A.
Foothill
Fullerton
Golden West
Grossmont
Irvine Valley
Lassen
Long Beach
Harbor
LA Valley
Peninsula
Palomar
Pasadena
San Bernardino Valley
San Jose
Santa Monica
Shasta
Sierra
West Valley
Ventura
Scottsdale (AZ)
Columbia Basin (WA)
Arizona JC All-Stars

As you can see, the field will feature a large group.   We can't promise reports on this one, but we might make it over there if we can survive the next week or so.  If you need further information, or if are interested in entering the event, feel free to contact Dieter Horton at his office: 714-992-7395.
