Fernando Sampson Commits
To Cal Poly SLO--(Sept. 15, 2001)

According to a published report in the Los Angeles Times yesterday (Sept. 14) from Eric Sondheimer (who is evidently spending his days now hanging out at the Fairfax HS gym, which is where all the good recruiting news takes place), Fernando Sampson (6'-1" Sr. PG/SG) has committed to Cal Poly SLO.

Fernando was being recruited by a number of west coast schools and a smattering of Ivies but selected Cal Poly instead. He announced his commitment to the Mustangs just one day after his Fairfax HS teammate, Evan Burns (6'-7" Sr. F) announced his verbal commitment to UCLA.  Fernando had a very good summer, playing at the Double Pump West Coast All Stars Camp and then attracting a lot of solid recruiting interest playing for his high school team during the Fairfax Summer tournament (the Fairfax-Goodman Classic) which occurred at the same time as the Las Vegas adidas Big Time tournament.

Cal Poly SLO is likely to be targeting Sampson to play the point.  They're a team that in a year from now will likely be desperately seeking someone to run the offense. First year coach Kevin Bromley inherits a recruiting class this season from outgoing coach Jeff Schneider (who by the way has set up his own recruiting and scouting service which has a very nice website) which doesn't include a point guard among the players entering other than Jason Allen (6'-1" Jr JUCO transfer) from Enid, Oklahoma who should help this year along with players like Steve Geary (5'-11" Jr. G) who redshirted last year.  Cal Poly ought to also have the services of R.J. Socci (6'-0" Fr. PG) from Santa Margarita HS, who enrolled there this year and was slated to walk-on to the team.

We have no other solid leads on who the Mustangs are looking to sign from the class of 2002, but maybe our friend Kevin Brown, who was hired at Cal Poly this summer after spending two seasons at D-II National Champions Kentucky Weslyan will consider breaching some security (i.e., NCAA regs) and talk to us about their recruits.....just kidding....and even if we did hear from a coach, do you think we'd publish the details for attribution?  Learned our lesson on that one this past July. . . .

Congratulations to Fernando and to Cal Poly on the commitment.
