CIF-SS Tournaments: An Early List Of Local
Varsity-Level Events--(Oct. 18, 2001)

Each year we post a list of high school tournaments, and we miss a few here and there.  But this year, the CIF Southern Section has released an early list of "sanctioned events" (which actually has a defined meaning under CIF Bylaws), and in this case, it means seasonal basketball tournaments. There are many other tournaments not included on this list, i.e., those sanctioned by the Central, San Diego and LA City Sections are not shown below; we'll try to get a list of all of those and work them into a master tournament schedule for the entire region, as well as a listing of which "national" level tournaments the top local teams will be attending (e.g., Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic, Slam Dunk to the Beach, City of Palms, etc).  In the meantime, we've at least got the Southern Section list below.   

This year, the first official practice can take place on November 10;  each team can play one scrimmage contest, which can occur on or after Nov. 19, and the first official game can be played on or after November 26, 2001, and that means for many, tournament play. We've taken the CIF's list and broken it down into three:   Varsity tournaments, Junior Varsity tournaments, and a combined list for Frosh and Frosh-Soph tournaments.  

We don't yet know who will be attending each tournament, but if you are a college coach you might find this list helpful, since all recruiting during the high school season is now mandated by the NCAA to takes place at official high school sanctioned events only.  And D-I colleges have limited time (especially in November and December) as well as limited recruiting budgets, tournaments like those listed below are a great way to see a number of teams in the same location in a limited period.   We'll try to update this information by obtaining lists of parrticipants at each tournament shortly. We also are fairly certain that this isn't a complete list of tournaments taking place which will be hosted by Southern Section teams, but it's a very good start.
