Already apparent to those in attendance, the Victor Valley High boys basketball team
saved the best for last against Apple Valley on Tuesday night.
The Jackrabbits erased a 17-point third quarter deficit and outscored the Sun Devils 23-3
in the final period to cap off an impressive comeback and a 78-60 non-league victory over
their longtime rivals.
Devion Price led the offensive charge for Victor Valley (8-1), scoring 15 of his 18 points
in the second half.
We had a pep talk at halftime, said Price. Coach told us to keep our
heads in the game and play good defense. At first I had my doubts, but once I saw that we
picked up the intensity I knew we could beat them.
The intensity that Price spoke of did not seem apparent in the first half for Victor
Valley. The Sun Devils (7-2) came out firing, scoring 24 first-quarter points, including
eight in the period by Apple Valley guard Jamal Holden, to gain a six-point advantage
going into the second period.
The Sun Devils continued to shoot well in the second quarter, building a 40-26 lead midway
through the period. The Jackrabbits went on a 8-0 run at the end of the quarter to cut the
margin back to six, but still found themselves trailing an Apple Valley squad that shot 57
percent from the floor on 17 of 30 shooting in the first half.
The visitors would reestablish the double-digit advantage with a 13-2 run to begin the
second half, giving Apple Valley a 53-36 lead in the opening minutes of the third period
and leaving the Jackrabbits looking exasperated.
It was then that Victor Valley found its energy, as the Jackrabbits capitalized on the
tiring Apple Valley unit, going on a 19-4 run at the end of the third to cut the margin to
two going into the final period.
Still, the Sun Devils held a 60-58 edge with just over 5 minutes remaining, but Victor
Valley scored the last 20 points of the game to win going away.
We ran out of gas, said Apple Valley head coach Bo Kent. We got tired
and we started making poor decisions.
Steven Thompson scored 17 points for the Jackrabbits and Kimo Brown added 14, but it was
the Victor Valley defense that got the job done, according to Victor Valley head coach
Matt Denny.
Our philosophy on defense is that if we do the job defensively, somebody is going to
score on offense, said Denny. This was a total team effort defensively. The
great thing about our guys is that they dont care who scores.
The Jackrabbits held Apple Valley to just nine field goals on 27 attempts in the second
half. Victor Valley shot 60 percent from the field on 18 of 30 shooting in the second half
to neutralize the hot start by the Sun Devils.
I was just hoping wed be ahead by one at the end of the game, said
Denny. I have a lot of respect for Apple Valley. They gave us everything they had.
Holden led the Sun Devils in scoring with 15 points. Will Logan and Jimmy Bailey each
added 14 points for the visitors.
Victor Valleys Price was red-hot in the second half, shooting 7 for 10 from the
field after a 1-for-8 start, spearheading the Jackrabbits 42-7 run to end the game.

The Valencia Vikings boys' basketball team came back from three separate 11-point deficits but could not hold off Lancaster down the stretch in a 70-61 loss Tuesday at Valencia High School.
|
||
It came down to the Vikings' inability to contain the hot shooting
Michael Webb from Lancaster as the 6-foot-1 senior drained eight of his game-high 28
points in the final 2:04 of the game.
"We're not playing as well as I hoped," said Vikings'
co-head coach Rocket Collins. "I'm not angry, but I am a little disappointed."
At times the Vikings looked terrific, utilizing a swarming defense
that frequently kept the Eagles (4-3) away from the low post. The problem was Lancaster
made the most of their few opportunities. Valencia never let down and kept with the
pressure and moved the ball well on offense. It just came down to being Lancaster's night.
"They out-played us, yes. Better team? No," said
Collins. "They were better than us today. If we play them again tomorrow we probably
beat them. They beat us to the loose balls and they got the breaks."
The difference came down to turnovers. Though the Vikings
committed 24 on the game, 13 were tallied in the second quarter alone. The Eagles then
used their hot shooting to stretch their five-point halftime lead to 11 midway through the
third quarter. Six unanswered points by the Eagles in just 1:14 put "Big Mo"
squarely on their shoulders.
After a basket by Lancaster's Anthony Layao with 1:34 to play in
the third quarter took the score to 50-39, it appeared the Eagles were going to put on a
show for the Vikings in the fourth quarter.
The problem was Ryan Zike stole the Eagles' show.
In the final 1:20 of the third frame, Zike knocked in seven,
including a follow up, a steal and a lay up. The sudden enthusiasm spilled over into the
fourth quarter with Zike, Jeremy Linbager and Scott Domingo. The three Vikings accounted
for 15 points between the two periods and helped Valencia go on a 15-3 run to take the
lead at 54-53 with just 5:31 to play. It was the Vikings first lead since giving up a 5-4
lead early in the first quarter.
That's when Lancaster, behind Webb and Charles Jones, knocked in
seven straight to re-take the lead and the momentum. The Vikings could not recover.
"It's the hardest team I've had to try to figure out what's
wrong," Collins said. "We shouldn't be 3-6. We should be 6-3.
One of the hot new Vikings to watch is junior Curtis Dunwoody. The
six-footer opened the game with a three-pointer, eventually draining four long-range bombs
in the first half on his way to 16 points. Dunwoody and Zike both led the Vikings with 16
points.
Zike's 16 points were despite a sore shooting shoulder that
limited his outside shot. The majority of his points came on drives through the lane.
Duane Fortune scored 11 first-half points Tuesday night to help San Marcos get rolling to a 62-47 basketball victory over Hueneme.
Asher Kupperman added 13 points and Fortune finished with 15 as the Royals held off a third-quarter rally by the Vikings to improve to 4-4 overall.
Hueneme outscored the Royals 23-10 in the third quarter before San Marcos returned the favor with a 23-9 fourth-quarter advantage.
"We went into a zone in the fourth after that third quarter," said San Marcos coach Chris Hantgin.
Kyle Hopkins scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter as San Marcos shot 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
"It was a complete effort in the fourth quarter," Hantgin said.

After slow start Upland a winner

UPLAND -- In its own eight-team tournament, the host team should never be trailing by 24
points in the first half. After all, isn't it supposed to schedule a patsy in the first
round to ensure advancement?
The Upland High boys basketball team, however, got a late first-half burst from point
guard Jay Rasch, and teammate Eric Holland hit on all five of his third-quarter shots as
the Highlanders rallied past Riverside La Sierra 63-54 on Tuesday in the Claremont Auto
Center Classic at Upland High School.
Upland moves on to play West Covina, which defeated San Bernardino Arroyo Valley earlier
in the day.
In reality, the game was scheduled not for any perceived weakness Upland saw in its
opponent. Rather, it marked the return of former assistant coach Andy Lynch, who is in his
first year at La Sierra after also serving five years as the Scots' junior varsity coach.
"I was really surprised we got out of the gate like we did," said Lynch, who was
warmly embraced by several of his former players during pre-game introductions, in
addition to renewing acquaintances with several faculty members and students after the
game. "But we have a young team and it showed."
All that showed early on, however, was that Lynch has a pretty good shooter in guard
Jeremy Andres, who hit on his first seven shots - three from 3-point range - en route to
19 first-half points. He missed equaling Upland's point total for the first half by just
one. The rest of his teammates weren't too shabby, as La Sierra hit on 61 percent of its
shots in the first half.
But Rasch scored from in close and on a pair of 3s to close out the half, cutting the
Eagles' lead from 36-12 to 36-20. That was enough of a boost for Upland to remain positive
for the second half.
"The approach is simple (when down by 24 points)," Upland coach John McNally
said. "Start from scratch and go two points at a time and chip away. That's all you
can do."
Upland started the second half with a 17-2 run, and when Julius Coleman converted a
three-point play for Upland's final points of the third quarter, the Scots led 49-46. They
would never trail again.
"When Upland turned up its press, we couldn't match their intensity," Lynch
said.
"We came and attacked them (in the second half)," McNally said. "We're
bigger and stronger than them, and we exacted that on them. We should have done that from
the beginning."
Upland led by five when Andres made it a one-possession game with his fifth and final
3-pointer to make it 56-54. But turnovers on back-to-back possessions sandwiched around a
pair of Rasch free throws in the final minute killed any chances of an Eagles' victory.
Andres finished with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, and teammate Oscar Vasquez had a
double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
For Upland, Holland finished with a team-high 22 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 night
from the line. Rasch finished with 14 points. The Scots benefited from their free-throw
shooting, where they connected on 12-of-13 shots in the final quarter, and 24-of-28 for
the game, or 86 percent. La Sierra, on the other hand, was 7-of-11.

MOJAVE - David Wiggs said the goal for the Boron boys basketball team is to win one of its games at the Mojave Tournament.
Not an exceptionally high goal for the Bobcats, considering they are playing in three games.
The Bobcats didn't notch that victory in their tournament opener, falling to host Mojave, 64-47.
Mojave advances to face McFarland at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. McFarland defeated Frazier Mountain, 66-34. Boron will play Frazier Mountain at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
But the improvements on the Boron squad are noticeable, even to Mojave coach Larry Satterfield.
The two teams played a week ago, with the Mustangs (4-3) dominating that contest, 54-24. Six Bobcats scored in the game, none in double figures.
The second time around, Boron (2-3) had two players score in double digits, with Jonathan Stafford leading the way with 14 points. Mike Bell added 10.
"Last week, (Mojave) scored 14 points before we even scored," said Wiggs, who is in his first season as the Boron coach. "It was a big thing to score early. They found they could compete with them. In the end its still a loss.
"Eventually, I hope to compete with the teams around here."
Boron won its first two games of the season, doubling last year's win total as the Bobcats finished the season 1-19. The Bobcats have also lost to Desert this season.
For now, Mojave is one of those teams, with 11 different players scoring on Tuesday, as L.D. Cox led the way with 18 points.
"Boron is getting a lot better," Satterfield said. "They are a lot better than they were a week ago."

MURRIETA ---- The Elsinore boys basketball team got all it could handle from a scrappy San Marcos squad Tuesday night in the first day of pool play at the Nighthawk Classic, but the Tigers hung on for a 57-51 win.
Elsinore (6-1) looked as if it would pull away from the Knights early in the fourth quarter, as senior forward Travon Keahey hit two free throws to give the Tigers their only double-digit lead of the night, at 48-38. But Kyle Moore buried a 3-pointer on San Marcos' next trip down the floor.
"We needed to make a couple stops and they hit consecutive 3-point shots," Elsinore coach Pete Rettinger said. "We needed to get our hands up on defense."
Jamar Hendrix, who led the Knights with 19 points, cut Elsinore's lead to one, 50-49, with a 3-pointer. Mack Green, however, answered at the other end with a 3-pointer of his own. He drained the shot from the top or the arc with 2:24 remaining, pushing the Tigers' lead to 53-49.
Green then got the job done at the free-throw line in the final two minutes, hitting four straight attempts to preserve the win. Keahey led the Tigers with 21 points, but was held to two points in the final period as the Knights double- and triple-teamed him in the post.
Green picked up the scoring slack with seven points in the fourth quarter.
"It's not always me," Keahey said. "Mack and all the guys always step up."
San Marcos had its hands full with Keahey in the first half. The lanky 6-foot-5 lefty scored 14 points in the first half, carving his way through the San Marcos defense on his way to several layups and running jumpers.
The Knights got a lift at the end of the first half, as Gihad Hamided found nothing but the bottom of the net on a desperation shot covering two-thirds of the court at the buzzer. Hamided's hustle was typical of San Marcos' play throughout the game.
"We knew that they were scrappy," Keahey said. "They just came out and played hard and hit a couple of 3-pointers."
Long range shooting kept the Knights in the game, as they connected on eight 3-pointers. Kyle Moore finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Moore was the closest thing San Marcos had to a post player. When Moore continuously stepped out on the perimeter, it created matchup problems for the Tigers. Rettinger had to go to a smaller lineup, moving Keahey to the post and sitting starting center William Hunt on the bench.
Elsinore will face Ontario at 6 p.m. Thursday in the second round of pool play.
Ontario 85, Riverside King 72 ---- Something had to give in the first game of the Nighthawk Classic, as both Ontario and Riverside King entered with unblemished records. The Jaguars, the defending tournament champions, remained unbeaten, as they prevailed decisively over the Wolves.
Ontario (5-0) led 41-31 at the half, but King (5-1) was able to get as close as 67-62 early in the fourth quarter.
Ontario (5-0) was led by Desmond Crews, who scored 21 points.
Marvin Lea led King, which is ranked 11th in the Los Angeles Times Southern California basketball poll, with a game-high 28 points.
Moors not satisfied in 50-43 win
Alhambra Tournament Coverage
By Keven Chavez

ALHAMBRA -- Tournament basketball offers a good opportunity for stronger teams to get back into the winning flow and for coaches of struggling teams to steer their players in the right direction.
So although perennial Almont League contender Alhambra High School defeated perennial Rio Hondo League also-ran San Marino, 50-43, on Tuesday in the first game of pool play at the Alhambra Tournament, you'd never guess it by listening to their coaches afterward.
"It's important that we start making some improvement," Alhambra coach Joe Petralia said. "The first half, we ran stuff fairly well and defended OK but we've had a hard time sustaining effort."
Early on, the Moors appeared on their way to a blowout. They kept San Marino (2-8) from getting many easy looks and found some success themselves with the outside shot en route to a 16-point halftime lead.
But the Titans came out red-hot in the third quarter. The team scored 17 points in the first 4:10 of the quarter, four more than in the entire first half, and Albert Wei's 3-pointer pulled San Marino to within 35-30.
"They're working hard and that's all I can ask them to do," said San Marino's first-year coach Sonny Hayes. "We've been having trouble starting games but once the adrenalin gets flowing we're alright. I'm proud of the guys."
The Titans kept it close, mainly behind the shooting of Michael Shia. The all-league guard scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half.
But Alhambra senior Erich Chung helped slam the door on any Titans comeback hopes with clutch outside shooting down the stretch. Chung scored nine consecutive Alhambra points in the fourth quarter, capped by a four-point play that gave the Moors a comfortable 12-point lead late in the period.
Chung scored a team-high 17 points. Art Chavez (11) and Duong Nguyen (10) each scored in double figures for Alhambra (4-3).
San Marino continues pool play today against Cerritos. Alhambra will play Cerritos on Thursday.
"We'll get a look at Cerritos (today) so we'll get a chance to work on things," Petralia said. "We're going to need to block out better, rebound better. We've just been lost at times."
Dear Mr. Gale,
We have never spoken before but want to let you know what a tremendous job you have done
with this web site. I have been the director of the La
Canada Tournament for the past 10 years and am sending you the information about this
year's tournament, which opens next Monday, Dec. 17. The
L.A. Times' Gary Klein, who I have known for about a decade, had told me how impressive
your web site is, and he was absolutely correct. I have
been a Socalhoops "junkie" since October. I hope to meet you in the near future.
My e-mail is csplowman@earthlink.net. Anyway, here is the La
Canada Tournament preview that perhaps you could post on the site. Thank you.
Best wishes,
