CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Thursday, 1/3/02--(Jan. 5, 2002)

The heart of high school basketball season is now beginning as the tournaments wind down, and league play starts.  For some of the larger leagues (7 or more teams per league), competition among the league teams began last month; for most everyone else, it starts this week.  Many of the LA City Section teams are off, or playing a reduced schedule until school reopens after the winter break, and the same is true this week for many of the Southern Section teams.  Still, there was plenty of action going on this past Wednesday.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from the local media. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

Mission League

Harvard-Westlake 72, Crespi 65 --Bryce Taylor had 26 points, eight rebounds and four steals for host Harvard Westlake (12-3, 1-1). Rob Koslowsky scored 22 points for Crespi (6-7, 1-1).  The win was payback for the Wolverines, who fell at Crespi two weeks ago. We saw the second half of the game, arriving just as the third quarter started, and H-W was leading 36-26 at the start of the quarter, and believe it or not, through the third quarter, things actually got worse for Crespi as they trailed by as many as 17 points late in the third.  The fourth quarter saw Crespi starting to make a little run, and Casey Wong hit two open three pointers from the top left-hand side of the key, and another runner, while Rob Koslowsky hit a jumper also.  Early in the fourth quarter, an incident occurred between Crespi point guard Alan Ellis and H-W's point guard Craig Weinstein, and when Ellis shove Weinstein during a deadball situation, the refs called a technical on Ellis, and Crespi coach Dornan pulled Ellis for a few minutes to cool down.  The incident alone probably didn't cost Crespi the game, but it sure didn't help not to have Ellis on the floor during that crucial quarter.  Bryce Taylor responded with a very nice one-handed dunk early (we were sort of initially surprised the refs didn't call him for hanging on the rim, but they motioned to Crespi coach Dick Dornan, who was protesting, that Taylor was waiting for the defenders to clear out before dropping to the floor, which actually in hindsight probably was the correct ruling).   Taylor's dunk put HW ahead 58-44.  Shortly thereafter, about midway through the fourth, Weinstein was called for a charge, his 5th personal, and that gave Crespi a bit more momentum again to take a run at closing the gap.  But like so many close games, this one came down to free throw shooting at the end, as Crespi was continually forced to foul; the final minute of the game probably took about 5 to actually play as the teams took turns at the line, and like the rest of the game, HW made more of their shots than Crespi did.  The Celts eventually managed to cut the HW lead to just three points with about 20 seconds remaining, and actually had a chance to tie the score, as they had the ball and time enough to make something happen.  But with the clock showing 13 seconds, and the ball in Crespi's senior point guard's hands, Crespi decided to go for the layup and the foul (or the steal on the inbounds) rather than take an open three, but came up with neither.   Ellis drove into the key from the right side of the lane, shot the layup, missed and again HW was forced to foul, sending HW's Robbie Wizenberg to the line again, and he made them both for the final 68-63 margin. Crespi got 22 points from Rob Koslowsky and 18 from Casey Wong. Senior point guard Allan Ellis finished with 11 points.

Notre Dame 72, St. Francis 47 --Freshman Beewee Vallesteros scored 22 points and Sean Djernas added 15 points for Notre Dame (5-10, 1-0). St. Francis fell to 5-6, 0-1. St. Francis shot just 30.9% and got blown out on the road. Chris Miller scored 25 points for St. Francis, and grabbed 10 rebounds, but not many others stepped up for St. Francis. Josh Reyes finished with eight points; Kevin Davies added seven. Notre Dame (5-10, 1-0 in league) blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring St. Francis (5-6, 0-1), 23-13.  Ten of the 14 players on Notre Dame's roster scored in the game.  St. Francis was 10 of 21 from the free-throw line, with Miller making just seven of his 16 attempts. St. Francis 7 13 19 8 -- 47 Notre Dame 12 23 19 18 -- 72 ST. FRANCIS -- Miller 25 and 10 rebounds, Reyes 8, Davies 7, Menzies 3, Orlandini 2, Sartoris 2. Three-pointers: Reyes 2, Davies. Orange rallied from two 13-point deficits to tie the game in the fourth quarter, 49-49, as 6-foot-4 junior forward Quenton Parker scored 24 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, while making 12 of 15 from the floor, mostly on short jumpers in the key.   Parker, however, fouled out with 1:02 left in the game and his team trailing, 56-53. In the third quarter, Costa Mesa was outscored 18-11, and Orange cut a 29-16 halftime deficit to six points. Parker scored 14 of Orange's points in the third, hitting 7 of 9 from the field. The Panthers continued to climb back in the fourth quarter, twice pulling within one point, before tying it, 49-49, on Parker's 10-foot jumper with 2:49 remaining on the clock. Costa Mesa's Chad Vakili drained his second of 11 three-point attempts with 2:40 to go in the contest to push the hosts ahead for good, 52-49. After Orange scored to pull within one point again, Vakili scored on a layup.   Conte then hit two free throws with 1:43 left to give the Mustangs a 56-51 edge.  Orange scored again, but the Mustangs made 4 of 6 at the foul line in the final minute to close out the Panthers.  Vakili led Costa Mesa with 19 points (he was 5 of 9 on two-point shots), five rebounds and two first-quarter steals, while Conte finished with 18 points, five assists (four in the second half), four rebounds and two steals.
