CIF-SS III-AA Semis: Amat Upends Artesia;
PD Stops Monsoons--(Feb. 23, 2002)

The Division III-AA finals will feature No. 4 Bishop Amat v. No. 3 Palm Desert as both of the Suburban League teams, each ranked No. 1 and No. 2 for much of the season in the SCIBCA polls, were defeated by lower seeded teams in the semifinals last night.  Here's the scoring recap from last night:

No. 4 Bishop Amat 57, No. 1 Artesia 54
No. 3 Palm Desert 49, No. 2 Mayfair 39

We'll post the bracket up separately as well as a preview of the finals. Here are the details from last night's games:


DIVISION III-AA
Semifinals

No. 4 Bishop Amat 57, No. 1 Artesia 54 --While Bisholp Amat trailed 32-29 at the half, it all came down to the last minutes of the game: Paul Porter gave Amat a 52-51 lead with a 15-foot jumper with 1:35 remaining. He then stole an Artesia pass and scored on a layup with 1:10 left to give Bishop Amat a 54-51 lead.  Porter then hit three of four free throws to preserve the lead.  With just 3.3 remaining on the clock and Kejuan Johnson with the ball in his hands, it all came down to the last three point basket.  Johnson, who had scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, took a long three at the buzzer, wihich hit the rim and bounced off as time expired to give Bishop Amat (23-6) the win over No. 1 seed and host Artesia (20-6) in a semifinal game played at Mayfair last night.  Amat got the lead at 53-50 with under a minute to play when Paul Porter stole the ball and hit a driving layup.  Porter scored 9 of his 15 points in the last five minutes of the game.  For Artesia, Jamel Gay scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while teammate Ryan Meilleur added 9 points and 7 rebounds.   John Haywood and Juan Canas scored 12 points apiece; Wesley Walker had a team-high eight rebounds.

No. 3 Palm Desert 49, No. 2 Mayfair 39 --Host Palm Desert (25-4) was led by Chase McQuillen who scored 15 points and teammate Donald Brady who had 12,   including four three-pointers while senior Josh Zazulia added 10 (including shooting 7-8 from the line in the fourth quarter) in the win over visiting No. 2 seed Mayfair (22-8) in a semifinal game played at Indio High School last night.  Palm Desert now moves on to the finals against No. 4 seed Bishop Amat which upset No. 1 seed Artesia.
