First Round Results

No. 1 Verbum Dei--Bye

St. Margaret's 60, Sherman Indian 56 --Paul Janczyk had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff Schafer made four three-pointers and had 17 points for host St. Margaret's (13-10) in the win over Sherman Indian (14-9).

Arrowhead Christian 57, Fairmont Prep 55 --Josh Cloud's 18-foot shot as time expired was the game-winning basket for Arrowhead Christian (16-8) and Josh Breckley finished with 26 points and 18 rebounds for ACA, while   William Washington scored 24 points for Fairmont (21-2).

Yeshiva 65, St. Genevieve 40 --Mike Pollack scored 23 points for Yeshiva (16-6).

Oaks Christian 53, Bell-Jeff 45 --Mike Hornbuckle scored 20 points for Oaks Christian (22-1) over Bell-Jeff (14-10). Bell-Jeff (14-11) got 25 points from guard Tyler Kealy, but no other Guard scored in double figures. Ryan Johnson (6'-6" Jr. F) finished with 6 points for Bell Jeff.

Ontario Christian 50, Mammoth 44 --Greg Talen had 15 points to lead visiting Ontario Christian (19-7), and Travis Hoekstra added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Solovy had 17 points for Mammoth (13-8). Despite trailing 22-5 in the second quarter and being down by four points at the half, Ontario Christian made a comeback and defeated Mammoth. In the fourth quarter, Ontario Christian held the Huskies to six points that were scored with 1:30 left to play.  Chris Garcia scored eight points and contributed six assists for Ontario.

Flintridge Prep 50, Anza Hamilton 27 --Mike Miller scored 12 points to lead host Flintridge Prep (11-11) over Anza Hamilton (12-11).   Flintridge Prep missed 41 field goals, but got 52 rebounds, including 26 on the offensive end and dominated the Bobcats. Flintridge Prep limited Hamilton to just seven field goals in 49 attempts (14.3%), including only three in the second half, and a single basket in the fourth quarter.  Prescott Gadd had a game-high 13 boards, and had 11 points. Hamilton 6 6 7 8 -- 27 Flintridge Prep 12 12 9 17 -- 50 Hamilton -- Yep 7, Mendez 6, Davis 4, Quinonez 4, Estrada 3, Minert 2 and 7 rebounds, Evans 1. Three-pointers: Estrada, Yep. Flintridge Prep -- Miller 12, Gadd 11 and 13 rebounds, Barden 7, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks, Mercer 6, O'Byrne 6, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, Ouchi 6, Gullion 2. Three-pointers: Ouchi.

Montclair Prep 64, Cate 34-- Montclair Prep (14-11) was led by Nick Stigger with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the first round win over the Rams of Carpenteria (7-13) at Montclair Prep.

No. 3 Serra--Bye

Boys' Republic 58, Brethren Christian 55 --Brethren Christian (16-11) missed a three-pointer with three seconds to play. John Flanagan scored 26 to lead Boys' Republic (14-6), including a free throw with 8 seconds remaining to give the Rams a three point lead and the game. Greg Scheiman contributed 15 and Jamal McGee added a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Desert 66, Woodcrest Christian 44 --Desert (16-5)   pulled away from a seven-point halftime lead with a 19-10 run in the third quarter and won against Woodcrest Christian (12-13).

Western Christian--Bye

San Gabriel Academy 87, Aquinas 83 --Nick Rosas had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead host San Gabriel Academy (19-6) and Jason Killebrew added 19 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in the win over Aquinas (10-10) which was led by Glenn Oheari with 44 points.

Chadwick 59, Thacher 57 -- Chadwick (10-7) overcame an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit behind 18 second-half points by junior point guard Matt Fournier. Both Fournier and Wes Putnam  played with four fouls each in the fourth quarter.  In addition to his 11 points in the fourth quarter, Fournier had a steal and passed to Brady Bohlinger for a basket to put the Dolphins up, 51-50, with just under four minutes to play.  After Thacher (5-11) pulled within a point, the Toads were forced to foul. With 10 seconds remaining, Fournier was made two free throws for a 57-54 lead and then Putnam scored again to close out the game.

No. 2 Calvary Chapel Downey--Bye


All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office.  Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host].  Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
