adidas Double Pump Spring Tourney:
Friday (1st Day) Results--(April 7, 2000)

Wow. . . we just died and went to basketbll heaven.  This tournament is absolutely loaded with a ton of top talent, in fact so much talent, it's almost obscene.  What seemed like a short day was actually just an intro to what will be a phenomenal day tomorrow at the adidas Double Pump Spring Tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and thinking about splitting the day between the Pump tournament and Rockfish is a pretty daunting task.  How much talent is here?   What coaches were in the gym?   Where do we begin. . . how about at the beginning.   First the scores and then we'll follow up with some individual highlights and team stuff.  Here are the scores from Friday's games:

That's great for raw data, but who was there, who played well and what coaches were in the house?

Coaches?  How about virtually every Pac-10, including UCLA (Jim Saia. . . Lavin is coming tomorrow), USC (both Dave Miller and Henry Bibby), Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Cal (Ben Braun), Arizona, Arizona State. . . and more: Michigan, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke (Wojo), Navy, Army, Wyoming, Montana, Northern Arizona, Northridge, Pepperdine, Portland State, Gonzaga, Rutgers, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Kansas State, Michigan State, San Diego State, you name the school, and they were there.

Players?  Phil Bryant, who together with his wife Jan, is the administrative engine running the Pump organization, usually compiles the coaches packets and they normally contain just the rosters of teams, and two cross-referenced lists of players, alphabetically and by jersey number (the latter is really only useful during the West Coast All-Star camp), and so with only one list to prepare for a tournament, he had some spare time on his hands, and compiled a list of players by height, and you want an interesting statistic which will demonstrate just how obscenely talent-laden the West Coast and SoCal in particular is right now with great players?   There are 89 players participating who are 6'-7" or taller; 53 players who are 6'-8" or bigger,  26 players who are 6'-8", 14 guys 6'-9",  11 players who are 6'-10" ,   two 6'-11" guys, two 7-footers and one guy, David Schaeffer playing for the Alleycats Red team who is 7'-4". . .   We don't really know how accurate all those measurements are, but that's a lot of tall guys all in one place at one time.

Highlights?   How about Salim Stoudamire (6'-2" Jr. SG) from Lake Oswego, Oregon, scoring 24 points, Jamal Williams (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF) from Corona Centennial scoring 23, Dennis Lattimore (6'-8" Jr. PF) from Halsteadt, KS, scoring 11 and Charlie Rodriguez (6'-6" Jr. PF) from Clovis West scoring 100 points in their win over a clearly outgunned Total Impact Squad (which looked pretty good. . . but they just didn't realize they were playing what is, for all practical purposes, a team made up of 10 high-Division I players).   Chris Hernandez (6'-2" Jr. PG) from Clovis West ran the point pretty much the whole night, and this team is just frighteningly good. . . and they didn't even have the Cravens with them tonight.

High scorer of the day:  Ben Jacobsen (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Omaha, Nebraska, who was playing for Bob Gottlieb's BWBA Orange team.

Biggest shocker of the day:  Nelson Washington's Bay Area Ballers, which had requested a head-to-head matchup against Next Level, a team of mostly Bay Area players, including Brandon Worthy (6'-2" So. SG) from Archbishop Mitty, who led his team to a one-point overtime win, 48-47, by scoring 22 points.  Great game.

Other high scorers:  Sante Gayle (6'-6" Sr. SG) from Tokay up in NorCal, who hit 23 points;  Matt MacGinnis (6'-2" Jr. SG) Villa Park, who scored 27 points in his BWBA team's win, but who would have had about 38 if the court he was playing on had a three point line (it didn't).   . . . Ellis Myles (6'-7" Sr. PF) from Compton Centennial, playing for Belmont Shore scored  21 points.  . . . Nate Harris (6'-6" Jr. F/C) from Skyview HS, in Utah, playing for the Utah Titans, scored 23 points. . . Others:  Chris Davis (6'-8" Sr. PF) from Crenshaw scored 20 points, Erroll Knight (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) from Chief Stealth, playing for FOH Orange scored 15, not a lot when you look at some of the other scoring, but he looked really impressive.

Others who played well:  Double Pump All-Stars:   Scott Borchart (6'-8" Jr. PF) from Chaminade looked good, working his way back from a small bout with mononucleosis, he looked impressive in the post and showed that he can play and compete at a higher level, it looks like he might be garnering some additional interest from UCLA and Cal, as well as San Diego State, ASU and others;  Quinn Hawking (6'-5" Jr. SG) from El Dorado was shooting the ball well, and he hit a bunch of threes (except they weren't because there was no three point line on the court. . .);   David Gale (6'-0" So. PG) from Buckley also looked good, hitting a couple of outside shots, driving the lane and dishing effectively;  Bakari Altheimer (6'-0" Jr. PG) from St. Elizabeth's in Oakland pushed the break, but he wasn't really pleased with his effort even though he had some impressive drives to the basket.

More random player notes:  Richard Cobbs (6'-6" Fr. SG/SF) showed good versatility, played tough defense and knocked down some difficult shots. Steve McMaryion (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Palisades, who played with H-Squad, hit for 16 points, rebounded like a maniac, but he may not be a qualifier, so he might be looking at a JC or prep school.

Favorite player of the day:   Josh Carrier (6'-6" Jr. SG/SF) from Bowling Green,  Kentucky.  He was here specifically so that west coast schools, UCLA in particular, could check him out, and no one was disappointed.  He plays hard all the time, but seems to be playing effortlessly, like he's the only guy on the floor. . . UCLA was watching him the entire game, and we had a chance to speak with Josh both before and after the game and he told us that he really would like to come out to California, and LA in particular for college.   He took an unofficial visit to UCLA on Thursday (he got into town with his cousin on Wednesday, and he spent all of Thursday at UCLA), and he told us he loved the school, and enjoyed his visit there.  Our impression was that if UCLA offers him, he'd grab it in a minute, and from what we saw in just this first game, if they don't, they're missing out again on a really great competitor who can provide some excellent shooting, great skills, and the ability to fill up the basket and defend. . . and best of all, he's a really, really nice young man.

We could go on and on, and perhaps we will tomorrow, but for now, it's close to 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning (we really should change the date on this article, but what the heck. . . ), so we're going to bed. . . more tomorrow, if we have time, if not, then you'll have to wait until Sunday night for more detailed reports.
